Question #6: In what areas of my life am I settling?

Midlife crisis? Or am I just ready to try something new? Or maybe I just long a more adventurous life? I mean who didn’t dream of being a safari guide or a fireman or a dare-devil in the movies?

Not me!

I dreamed of being free. I dreamed of a life where everyday was new and challenging. I used to have daydreams of jumping on the back of a motorcycle with no destination.

I eventually bought a Kawasaki Vulcan motorcycle a few years ago. I signed up for some training classes at the local Harley Davidson and had visions of a completely different life for myself. The dream was better than the reality. I just couldn’t move past the risks that seemed to be at every turn. I was glad I had given it a try though.

Challenges vs Settling..

There was an older woman in my class that had decided at some point in her life that riding on the back of her husband’s motorcycle was good enough.

Then something changed.

She had decided she wanted a bike of her own and was in the class learning to control her own motorcycle. Unfortunately, even the small motorcycle used for the class was too much for her to handle. At the end of the first day, she had decided it wasn’t for her and left the class.

I was even more determined to make sure I made the most out of my life.

“Life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting ‘Holy Sh*t, What a ride!'”

– Hunter S. Thompson

As I continue on my FI journey, I remind myself of this quote. My goals of FI shouldn’t mean putting all of my life on hold. There are some sacrifices worth making, but there are some that aren’t. Traveling to visit friends or family, going out to eat every so often and buying something that may be a little impractical is okay. My intent is more to enjoy the journey, as much as I hope to, someday enjoy the destination.
